I Have A Dream!!!

By Aminu Yusuf Malam

I have a dream that one day we will have, at least, the basic infrastructures a country needs to develop. That one day poor roads issue can only he assessed and witnessed in the books of history. That potable water will no longer be a thing to waste much thoughts on. Generators companies will no more find a good market in Nigeria. We will not worry about hunger; that it will go, for good. In the near future, Nigeria shall be great. I have a dream!

I have a dream that the rate of unemployment will be reduced to its lowest level. To a zero level, I dream. That our youths will no longer live in the dark cell of penury. Lives will be strengthened. Hopes restored. Self-reliance will reign among our youths. That no one will have an excuse to go for robbery, thuggery or theft. Evermore, unemployment cases will, only, be heard from outside. We are bound to develop. We will develop. I dream we would. I have a dream!

I have a dream that the issue of insecurity in Nigeria will only be told in past tense. Murders will never be part of Nigeria's woes, if there might be some (something I dream not). Terrorist will no longer attack us not only because of the fierce security I dream of, but because of the relative peace we would live to witness.

[Armed] robbery will cease to strive for survival, it'd be crushed. That thieves will be contented and stay to their means. Our people will no more be fooled to go for extremism, religious or political. Kidnappings, abductions, bombings will all be nothing to ponder, and be worried, over. Our security system will be fortified. Nigeria will live in peace again and forever. I have a dream!

I have a dream that one day, not long, no one will dare to think of Nigeria at the mention of corruption. No Nigerian will be gullible to welcome corruption. That our leaders will halt to get involved in corrupt practices, and the masses will shun to be part of it. Public offices will no longer be the places used for - and got through- lobby and the i-know-so-and-so places we know them to be. That everyone will be judged based on his merits; no added factor. We will overcome that evil thing called impunity; no one will be above the law. That security forces will learn to jettison bribe, and our citizenry will shake to stop giving it. Everyone will be provided with the basic means of survival, and greed will leave us alone. My dream for Nigeria is too big and much, but is definitely achievable. Let's dream big... I have a dream!

I have a dream that our education sector will be strong and able. That everyone will get access to education, hopefully for free. That strikes will not be part of our schools' chores, and the government will be as responsible. Teachers will be more qualified and dedicated. Students will be serious and hardworking. That quality education will be among the symbols of Nigeria [ns].

One day foreigners will be flooding at the seam to be educated in Nigeria. Europeans, Asians, etc. will find Nigeria a befitting country for their education. That no Nigerian will go abroad to study because his country has failed. One day we will be an excellent example of great nations on the globe. ' We will be able to speed up that day' when all of Nigerians, Southerners and Northerners; Muslims and Christians; Fulani, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Igala, Tiv, Idoma, etc.; young and old, will be able to join hands and work for the betterment of the nation. I have a dream!

I have a dream that elections will forever remain free and fair, to our specification. No one could muster the courage to rig a single vote. All will be accordingly. That politicians will no more be thinking of buying people's votes with money or food, or whatever. Election officers will develop to work solely for the country, not a party or an individual. Every single vote must count. All shall be well. That politicians will be more honest and God-conscious. I have a dream!

I have a dream that religious bigotry will be chased away from our dear country. That we will all learn to accept each other. No one will oppress another for his religion, ethnicity, tribe or region. We will come to accommodate each other. That negative sentiments will find no space in our minds. Nigeria shall rise. I have a dream!

I have a dream that politics will be understood, undertook fairly. That people will no longer go into politics in order to nest their feathers. Nigeria will always be in our hearts before political ventures. That the politics of looting end embezzling public funds will stop. That the masses will hugely benefit from the leadership (in politics). Our Nigeria shall overcome its challenges. I have a dream!

I have a dream that we will no longer be the Nigerians we used to be. The killings, murders, kidnappings, suicide bombings, attacks we will stop with all we have and can. I have a dream that we will rise to a higher level of development and civilization. I have a dream that we will separate politics from religion, in a simpler, convenient way. I have a dream that we will ignore the evil clutches pushing us to stir and fuel crisis. I have a dream that I have many dreams. I remember one sage's word: " If you can dream it, you can achieve it". Thus, I have a dream!
