NEMA Reveals 15,204 Displaced Due To Attacks

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Monday revealed that 15,204 persons have been displaced by the weekend's attack on Damboa town, in Borno south, Northeast Nigeria.

Speaking to journalists in Maiduguri, the Northeast information officer of the agency, AbdulKadir Ibrahim said the internally displaced persons are presently seeking refuge in Biu and Maiduguri, both in Borno state and Goniri in Gujba local government area of Yobe state.

According to Ibrahim, the number of displaced persons in Biu as at Monday stood at 10,204 and , 3000 in Maiduguri while 2,000 are in Goniri.

He said the displaced people were not only from Damboa town but from surrounding locations of Kimba, Madaragrau, Mandafuma, Chikwar Kir, Bomburatai and Sabon Kwatta.

Ibrahim, who disclosed that the agency has concluded plan to take relief materials to the displaced persons, said "NEMA is going for camp management in the aforementioned locations to cater for the needs of the IDPs."

He said initial assessment indicates that the IDPs require basic household items including plates, spoons, towels, cups, clothings, beddings, food items, blankets, mosquito nets and sanitary pads.

The NEMA spokesman said the IDP persons that the agency have had to attend to from January, 2014 to date is 165, 107 as at Monday 21st July.

He said the Director General of the agency, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Sidi has to postpone his proposed visit to Saudi Arabia for lesser hajj to supervise efforts at serving the emerging humanitarian crisis as a result of the capture of Damboa by the insurgents and subsequent mass exodus.
