Aliyu Assents To Law For Stiffer Penalties For Rape Offences

Niger State governor, Dr. Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu, has assented to the Niger State House of Assembly bill seeking stiffer punishment for rapists and people engaged in sexual abuse and other related offences.

A statement by the chief press secretary to the governor, Israel Ebije, said other bills passed into law and assented to are the law that provides for the constitution of Sharia Courts in Niger State and the law to establish the Niger State Livestock and Fisheries Institute.

He stated that the law seeking stiffer punishment for rapists and sex offenders is necessary because it will serve as deterrent to perpetrators and protect potential victims.

“Once people are aware that the gavel of the law will strike hard on them for rape, the ugly trend will reduce or completely stop. One major factor why cases of rape appear to be increasing in our society is the fact that laws are quite lenient on such despicable offenders,” he said.

According to the statement “Governor Aliyu has never hiding his disdain for rapists and sex offenders. This law therefore properly reflects his desire to provide safety.
