Nigerian gospel singer currently on deathrow in Indonesia, Okwudili Ayotanze, might just be saved after all as the Nigerian emissary is seeking an appeal to reverse his case with the on-going talks between the permanent secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Danjuma Sheni and Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Harry Purwanto.

Okwudili, fondly called Dili, within the correctional facility, was caught in 2001 trying to smuggle 1.15 kilograms of heroin from Pakistan into Soekarno-Hatta international airport in Jakarta and the verdict in such cases is death.

Reports have emerged that the permanent secretary was quoted saying the ambassador confirmed that Indonesian laws state that engaging in drug-related activities would spell death but talks are hoping to change the fate of the now born-again artiste.

Purwanto said, "We still recognize the death penalty in our criminal justice system in some serious crimes including terrorism and narcotics and some other things.”

It was while he was in jail that he got born again and began producing songs which have been said to be numbered about 70.

The man of God who attends executions of inmates, Father Charles Burrows, has recommended that the Nigerian be released as the reformation of Dili is complete and does not need to be executed.

He said, "He was elected by his friends as head of the Christians at Pasir Putih prison and it is him who always prepares the altar, calls up the Christian friends and organises the music and readings so the service can go well."
